The link between the Thames and Severn and the Wilts and Berks Canals was completed in 1819, and finally abandonned as a commercial concern in 1912. It runs alongside the road at Hayes Knoll near Purton Stoke, with a lock near Newth's Lane. There were wharves at Cross Lanes. Renovation work on this stretch of the Canal is under way and a lock has been completed at Moulden Hill on the outskirts of Swindon. Another lock is currently being refurbished alongside the Cricklade Road. Further details and progress are being written up in the Purton Magazine by Dave Warren.,
