120 Villagers attend Golden Jubilee Garden Party
On Monday 3rd June, the weather was a little uncertain about how it should
behave at this special gathering. However, the venue was superb, the lawns
of Purton House, courtesy of David and Moyra Ryan. Your Committee had spent
an anxious morning dodging the showers, putting out the bunting, gazebos,
umbrellas, tables and chairs.
Everyone who arrived was greeted with a bucks fizz. Philip made a speech welcoming
all who were there and thanked the Committee for their hard work in preparing
for the day, Moyra and David for the use of their garden, and Bert and Rosemary
Hicks for judging the Patriotic Palaces.
A shower of rain cut short the speech (fortunately ?). but it did not last
long and the sun shone for the rest of the afternoon. There was an excellent
village turnout - 120 people - most of whom had dressed smartly for the occasion,
with many fine hats in evidence.
On the Silver jubilee we sent a telegram to the Queen and this time we had
hoped to send an email, but guess what - no royal email address!!. So, on
behalf of you the Villagers, we sent a formal letter of congratulations to
the Queen and this was read out. Subsequently we have received a reply from
Sir Robin Janvrin, the Queen's Private Secretary, expressing her appreciation
of our comments.
We toasted the Queen with champagne, we sang the National Anthem and we ate
"Union Jack" Jubilee cake. Wendy Smith had won the honour of cutting the Cake,
and our thanks go to Katherine Young for baking it so beautifully.
It was a good social gathering of Village people, all enjoying an afternoon
of chit-chat, and delicious food, fit for a reception at Buckingham Palace!
A big thank you to all who attended and helped make this such a wonderful
event and of course, special thanks to your hard working Committee.
Jubilee Patriotic Palaces - The Winners
Our thanks also to all those who got into the spirit and took part in this
competition, the village was a riot of red, white and blue for the whole Jubilee
Weekend.
The Winners were; Highly Commended - The Chapel and Chestnut Cottage (Bryan
and Denise Simpkins) Third - Terry and Louise Giles. Second - Little Hurst
(Brian and Ursula Scott). First - St Vincent (Philip and Jacqui Richings).
The winners received a voucher for a meal for two at the Bell Inn - thanks
to Dave and Anita.
Jubilee Disco - Villagers dance the night away
In the evening, at the 'Starlight Ballroom' (aka the specially decorated Young
Farmers' Hut), fifty villagers had a great trip down memory lane enjoying
the hits of, if not the last 50 years - then certainly the last 25, kindly
presented by Alan Frazer. - Hi Ho Silver Lining! - An excellent end to what
had been "a jolly good day in Purton Stoke. "
Jubilee Raffles - £150.00 raised for charities
We raised £105 in the afternoon and £45 in the evening, which on your behalf,
will go to the two Charities The British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research
UK.
